Words in the Dark: Post 6
NaNoWriMo wraps up for another year, but for many writers the noveling has just begun as they move into a stage of completing the first draft, if not done already, and the revision process.
My Buddies’ genres for this year include
- literary
- fantasy
- technical
- mystery
- science fiction
- science fiction
Genres by the same Buddies in 2016 and 2015 were
- literary
- fantasy
- romance
- sci-fi/fantasy
- sci-fi thriller/suspense and horror/supernatural
- science fiction
The NaNo Buddies’ final word counts this year turned out as follows
- 75,463
- 50,350 (reached on day 20)
- 50,177 (reached on day 30)
- 18,545
- 14,121
- no word count entered
Congratulations!
I am not on the list because my sole job for NaNo 2017 was to cheer and encourage. Actually, I am helping a young adult with a book project, so I have deferred my own for the time being.
Too often, writers feel like failures when they realize they will not make the enchanting 50K finish. Instead, they should celebrate how far they have come. Any writer who writes is ahead of the one who doesn’t.
Writers can run into serious life obstacles involving work, family, or personal illness. Also, for some of us, myself included (unless it involves a rewrite), the NaNo marathon process isn’t always the best strategy. Sometimes, slow and steady makes a better book.
That never stops me from considering NaNo year after year. I’ll be looking at the feasibility of entering NaNoWriMo in 2018, of course, to see how many words I can write in the dark during the cold days of another November.
Think warm glow of a fireplace, candles, or salt lamps. Think smell of books. Think steaming cup of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate!
Until next year, Wrimos!
