The element of hope makes even the darkest, saddest stories compelling and memorable. Hope gives humans the will to go on in the face of adversity.
Stories that carry a glimmer of hope amidst devastation in all its forms make readers feel that the book, movie, or video was worth their time and emotional investment.
Viggo Mortensen says that viewers of The Road, one of the bleakest post-apocalyptic movies in existence, have stated, “I saw this movie. It broke my heart, but it also put my heart back together in a way I hadn’t expected, by the end.”

Breaking Benjamin’s music video for Ashes of Eden also inspires a sense of hope, perhaps because of the strength of the love, the sacrifice, and the magnitude of time involved.
I think this is one of the most beautiful videos ever made.
ASHES OF EDEN — Breaking Benjamin
I remember The Road being a very powerful movie. Couldn’t get it out of my had for ages after seeing it.

Same. Just goes to show how amazing it was. Great acting, too.
Did you review it? I’ll have to check.

A good film, an even better novel if you haven’t read it, I would highly recommend it. π

Hi, Iain. Sorry for the late reply — found this in my spam comments (glad I checked!). I agree with you about the novel being better. Books usually are. I bought the novel The Road a few months ago. I hope to read it soon because I’m quite curious how it compares.

Ashes of Eden is an awesome song. Hope is crucial for the reasons you mentioned. A dark situation without hope is like a steak served without cutlery. In other words, it must be there. Great post!
